Michael Cusack Centre

The Michael Cusack Centre was built in 2006 to commemorate the centenary of the death of Michael Cusack. Over two floors, the centre was designed to showcase the unique and captivating Burren landscape.

The Michael Cusack Exhibition Room is the entry point to the Michael Cusack Centre and start of the tour. This room is dedicated to the remarkable life and memory of Michael Cusack, founding father of the GAA. The displays relate information from 20th September 1847 and retell Michael’s story from where he was born in the Irish famine-era thatched cottage through his teaching career, the Cusack Academy in Dublin and on to the transformative formation of the GAA on 1st November 1884 in Thurles.

Experience

The first of its kind in Ireland, a revolutionary multimedia presentation features unique holographic projections of Michael Cusack who greets visitors to this 19th Century Burren Irish Famine Era Cottage. This multimedia facility greatly enhances the visitor experience by giving a real and tangible insight into Cusack’s life and the development of the GAA at a difficult time in Irish history.

Information panels and photographs line the main exhibition room walls and audio visual presentations also recount the evocative story of Cusack and the GAA. Audio visual displays showcase some of the key historical gems from the world of Gaelic games including hurling, Gaelic football and camogie, as well as teams of the past.

A glass wall in the exhibition room offers a stunning view of the humble 19th century herdsman’s home and the surrounding Burren landscape. There is much to immerse yourself here and you can expect to stay for at least 30 minutes. You receive a map of the centre on this guided tour.

We also provide Wellbeing Programmes and Exhibitions & Mini Concerts as well as online and live Meetings & Conferences for up to 40 delegates in our high-tech centre facilitated with high speed broadband connection.

  • I would really recommend this visit to any GAA enthusiast. It was humbling to visit the actual home that one of the founders of the GAA who met in Hayes’ Hotel in Thurles in 1884 grew up in and went on to found the association.
