Exhibition Centre & Audio Visual Display
Guided tours of our exhibition centre are available each day from 10am. Tours are given by fully trained tour guides, many of our guides are local and have a wealth of knowledge of the Burren and local history.
Our tour provides a unique cultural, historical and educational tour of the life and times of Michael Cusack. Michael Cusack was one of Irelands most extraordinary men. Born in the worst years of the famine, Michael Cusack gave Ireland and the world the Gaelic Athletic Association one of the greatest sports organisations which still exists today, better know as the GAA.
Feel free to contact us about the exhibition centre, for more details and booking information.
Michael Cusack & The GAA
On October 11 1884 an article, written by Cusack, called ‘A word about Irish Athletics’ appeared in the United Ireland and The Irishman. These articles were supported a week later by a letter from Maurice Davin, one of three Tipperary brothers, who had dominated athletics for over a decade and who gave his full support to the October 11 articles. A week later Cusack submitted a signed letter to both papers announcing that a meeting would take place in Hayes’s Commercial Hotel, Thurles on November 1 1884. On this historic date Cusack convened the first meeting of the ‘Gaelic Athletic Association for the Preservation and Cultivation of national Pastimes’. Maurice Davin was elected President, Cusack, Wyse-Power and McKay were elected Secretaries and it was agreed that Archbishop Croke, Charles Stewart Parnell and Michael Davitt would be asked to become Patrons. From that initial, subdued first meeting grew the Association we know today. www.gaa.ie
The Carron Tea Room at the centre is a cosy spot to just sit, relax and enjoy the spectacular surroundings while sampling some local produce such as Mrs. O’Loughlin’s scones or Linnalla Ice Cream. You can enjoy our light refreshments in the café, or if the weather is kind, why not sit in the idyllic garden overlooking the cottage.
